My husband broke out in shingles 4 weeks ago. On his face. He still deals with pain, and has had several trips to the doctor and the ophthalmologist, because it was close to eye and on his cornea. Starting anti-vax meds early helped it from getting worse or causing corneal damage.
My son, according to his bloodwork, had already had the chicken pox…….. AND then, he got them…….. :O. And it was bad…… head to toe….. he is still healing and on week 3…… They called it a “wild variant” strain. It was in every place you could imagine a chicken pox might hide. Also, throat, gums, tongue. He lost 10 pounds. It hurt to eat.
My husband was in pain, my child was covered in pox….. I did a lot of crying.
I can’t say what was right or wrong in this scenario. Even our doctors scratched their heads a bit. We did it all right. Bloodwork, making sure we were current on vaccines, etc.
At this point, we are praying for no scars with the pox
I will say this: my husband should have gotten the shingles vaccine. It would have saved him and my son a world of pain.
IF we had known the chicken pox were even remotely a possibility, we would have vaccinated my son. (We and the doctors thought he was safe.)
I do not care what anyone thinks about vaccines. It’s a free country; you can do what you want. I will say that if you saw the level of suffering my son went through and you could have prevented it, you would have. That is all.
Meanwhile, I will be getting my shingles vaccine as soon as everyone in my house is well – because I might feel bad for a day or two, and I need to find time for that as a mom :).
